We don\u2019t know yet! We have just begun becoming with each other, as we move fluidly through authors, texts, readings and spoken words. We first met each other, against all odds, during the pandemic summer of 2020, at Rosie Braidotti's Summer School on Post-Human Knowledge.<\/p>\n

As the world had gone digital, we sat daily, for several hours in a row, to passionately discuss the possibilities and emergence of different ways of knowing, and being in, the world, beyond human centeredness and exceptionalism.<\/p>\n

As birds of a feather, we soon flocked together, and this was how the idea of putting together a reading group on post-humanism and nonhuman animals was born. We then settled around the idea of a webinar where we can meet online every 4 months, to discuss important works in post-humanist scholarly literature that address \u201cthe animal question\u201d.<\/p>\n

We are researchers, educators, students, artists, practitioners\u2026 We come from different disciplinary backgrounds, different countries and continents. From this collaborative movement and through our encounters, we expect to better understand the contingent and ever-changing multispecies entanglements that characterize our common life-worlds.<\/p>\n

If the question of dwelling in a more egalitarian multispecies world triggers you\u2026 and if you are comfortable with not knowing, but instead constantly seek to be surprised\u2026 you will find here a space of intellectual freedom, debate and mutual respect, to imagine a more liveable world to all species.<\/p>\n

\"Design research has not always embraced non-humans as explicit stakeholders. Contemporary more-than-human and posthuman approaches increasingly challenge this norm. While the importance of these orientations is undeniable in projects that explicitly target non-humans as receivers of an intervention, or as design partners, in this talk I will argue that these practices are also relevant in works that do not fully decenter humans and position them as the main receivers of a designed thing. Anchoring my argument in the design space of human-forest interactions, I will reflect on a series of forest-based design research projects in which non-humans were never explicitly \u201cthe brief\u201d, yet nonetheless influenced both the design process and its outcomes. Through vivid examples, I will show how co-designing from-the-wild (that is, through prolonged, embodied, and attentive engagements within forest ecologies) allowed non-human livelihoods to become part of the design situation and, at times, to substantially shape what emerged \u2013 opening up unforeseen generative avenues and imbuing meaning-making with more-than-human sensibility, even if the research was primarily exploring human experiences in a broad sense. Through these examples, I will challenge binary notions that design can be either human-centered or more-than-humanely oriented. Instead, I will argue that designing for humans in attentive co-presence with more-than-human others can give rise to ideas that escape the bounds of anthropocentrism, making the design of things targeting humans synergic with more-than-human concerns. The talk will thus invite designers and researchers to consider how methodological stance, rather than intention alone, can open space for more-than-human agencies to meaningfully participate \u2013 within, but especially at the peripheries of, more-than-human design.\"<\/p>\n

Ferran Altarriba Bertran is an Associate Professor at ERAM Escola Universit\u00e0ria de les Arts (Salt, Catalonia), where he leads the Playful Living Lab. His research explores how to co-design technologies and experiences that support ways of living that are both joyful and caring. As part of this work, he investigates how technology can mediate joyful interactions in forest ecologies, building on his personal relationship with forests as important spaces in his everyday life.<\/p>\n

Ver\u00f3nica holds a PhD in Sociology, and is a social researcher in the field of Human-Animal Studies, at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Here, she currently convenes the Human-Animal Studies Hub, and coordinates two research projects: CLAN, on children and companion animals; and Liminal Becomings, on animals in disasters. At ICS-ULisboa she also coordinates the post-graduate course \u201cAnimais e Sociedade\u201d; the reading group Animal Wonder; and she co-coordinates the International Summer-School in Human Animal Studies (with Mal\u00e4rden University, Sweden).<\/p>\n

Clara Ven\u00e2ncio is a PhD candidate in Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, where she collaborates with the Human-Animal Studies Hub (HAS-Hub) at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa), on her doctoral project ALIVE \u2013 Human-Animal Living: designing with families for more-than-human cohabitation. She is a member of the HAS-Hub and co-coordinates the biannual webinar series The Post-Human Animal. Previously, she worked as a research fellow on the CLAN \u2013 Friendships Between Children and Animals project at ICS-ULisboa. Clara holds a Master\u2019s degree in Product Design from the School of Arts and Design in Caldas da Rainha, where her thesis was titled Animal Dignity \u2013 Developing Habitats for Domestic Animals. Anna Vladimirova PhD Candidate at the Faculty of Education and Psychology, University of Oulu. She is also a part-time coordinator of the Biodiverse Anthropocenes Research Programme (ANTS). Anna\u2019s research is located at the intersection of early childhood education and outdoor learning. In her study she discusses the anthropocentrism of adventure education and advocates for diversification of outdoor learning approaches in the context of Finland by moving away from children-centred to relational pedagogies. Her main research interests include place-responsive pedagogy and body-place relations, ethics in multispecies encounters, affective materialities of the ordinary. She teaches \u201cIntroduction to Environmental Education\u201d course for MA students and coordinates various events dedicated to exploring questions of environmental sustainability. She dedicates her research to the field of animal studies, media studies, and environmental and scientific journalism. Kristen Livera is an Anthropologist who investigates the intersubjective experiences of interspecies entanglements that transversally connect beings in a network of meanings. She develops a multi-constructivist ethology to cultivate an attention towards the interdependent relations woven between species. Within these shared milieux, her research attends to the reconfigurations and rearticulations of human and animal bodies, of shared sociality amongst our non-human co-conspirators. Maria Helena Saari is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Faculty of Education at the University of Oulu and Visiting Scholar at the Human-Animal Studies Hub. She is currently Co-Leader of the Envisioning Sustainability Research Hub of the Biodiverse Anthropocenes Research Program and Chair of the Finnish Critical Animal Studies Network (CASFinland). She was awarded the Senior Animal Law Researcher Award by the International Centre for Animal Law & Policy (ICALP) for her doctoral thesis \u2018Animals as stakeholders in education: Towards an educational reform for interspecies sustainability\u2019. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on animals in education (policy and pedagogy), interspecies sustainability and justice, environmental education, and animal law. Mariska Jung (she\/her) is a PhD candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). She is based at the Department for Political Sciences and affiliated to RHEA, the university\u2019s research centre on gender, diversity and intersectionality. Additionally, she is a member of the Race-Religion Constellation research hub at Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Jung studies contemporary racism in Europe and theorizes the dynamics between race, religion and animal(s\/ity). Prior to her PhD, Jung worked as a researcher with anti-discrimination NGOs in Belgium and the Netherlands. Pedro Figueiredo Neto (1984), anthropologist and filmmaker. He is an architect by training (FAUP, Portugal), and obtained his PhD in Anthropology by the \u00c9cole des Hautes \u00c9tudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS-Paris) and ISCTE-IUL in 2016. He is a researcher at the ICS-ULisboa since 2017. Drawing on a solid ethnographic approach, his research focus on topics such as forced displacement, borders, mobility, development, extractivism, refuge, and violence, namely in the African context (Angola, Zambia, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal). Maria Sofia Pimentel Biscaia holds a doctoral degree in Literature by the University of Aveiro (2005). She has conducted interdisciplinary research in the fields of visual, gender and postcolonial studies, including on South Asian, African, British and Luso-American authors. She has published extensively in domestic and international journals and is the author of the book Postcolonial and Feminist Grotesque: Texts of Contemporary Excess. She also co-edited the collection of essays Intercultural Crossings: Conflict, Memory, Identity. She is part of the international project Bodies in Transit 2 which addresses how bodies have been historically transformed through social relations, discourses, and technologies, by drawing from feminist, queer, postcolonial and posthumanist theories of the embodied self. She has been increasingly interested in Critical Animal Studies and has presented numerous papers in international conferences on related issues ranging from queer animality, food studies, advertising and national identity, feminist and postcolonial intersections. She has published among others \u201cLoving Monsters: The Curious Case of Patricia Piccinini\u2019s Posthuman Offspring\u201d (2019) and \u201cWhat Comes After the Woman: Becoming Plant in Han Kang\u2019s The Vegetarian\u201d (2019). The article \u201cOf Mice and Women: Gendered and Speciesist Violence in Joyce Carol Oates\u2019s \u2018Martyrdom\u2019\u201d is forthcoming in 2021 in the volume Cultural Representations of Gender Vulnerability and Resistance published by Palgrave.
